The Scene: STK opens its D.C. outpost on Thursday

“This is definitely a step up from CPK,” joked one stilettoed guest at the grand opening of the uber chic steakhouse for cool kids, STK, in Dupont Circle on Thursday night. California Pizza Kitchen, which once occupied the same space on Connecticut Avenue, this place is not.

The thick velvet rope, the thin models sticking pouty mouth tattoos on the decidedly unstuffy crowd of 400, the white leather lounges, the DJ and moody club lighting all spoke to the franchise’s tagline, “Not your daddy’s steakhouse.” Maybe in the District that sentence could be revised to read, “not your congressman’s steakhouse”? If The Palm, Charlie Palmer and the latest new kid, Joe’s Stone Crab, are for the power set, then STK, which first opened in 2006 as a steakhouse for women, is for the posh set. That growing crowd of fashionable and partying Washingtonians that makes its living off the Hill. Proof? The cops showed up at one point when the crowd got too big for the sidewalk. Instead of shutting things down though, the police got “#kisSTK” temporary tattoos.
