In a newly published essay, former White House intern Monica Lewinsky — whose affair with President Clinton led to his impeachment — said people have speculated that the reason she hasn’t spoken publicly for more than 15 years about the scandal is that the Clintons paid her off to keep quiet.

Not true, she says in the Vanity Fair piece.

Now, former Second Lady Lynne Cheney is suggesting that the Clintons are actually behind the Lewinsky’s decision to finally speak up.

In an interview last night on the FOX News’ “O’Reilly Factor,” Cheney said she sees the fingerprints of Hillary Clinton, who is expected to run for  the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, on the timing of the essay, which was released on Tuesday. ““Would Vanity Fair publish anything about Monica Lewinsky that Hillary Clinton didn’t want in Vanity Fair?” she wondered.

That’s one going theory about the former intern’s splashy revelations — that airing them now defuses them as possible ammo for campaign mud-slinging. Cheney thinks so. “Getting it out of the way so we can say one more time it’s old news seems to me like a strategy or a tactic perhaps,” she says.
