It took more than two decades, three kids and one letter to Santa, but Rep. Sean  Maloney (D-N.Y.) and longtime partner Randy Florke were married Saturday in Cold Spring, New York.

“Even after 22 years together, we’re overwhelmed by how blessed we feel to celebrate this special day with our friends and family. With our three kids by our side, this couldn’t have been a more perfect day,” the couple said in a statement, adding that they would “continue to fight to ensure all families can experience the joys of a lifetime commitment.”

Florke, 51, proposed to Maloney, 47, on Christmas Day after their youngest, 11-year-old Essie, asked Santa in a handwritten letter on her dad’s congressional letterhead, “Santa can you try making my wonder-ful fathers get married. They are a loving couple!” She also asked for some Legos.

Maloney is the first openly gay member of Congress from New York and only the second member of Congress to marry a same-sex partner while in office. The first was then-Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass).
