Obama will not take the ice bucket challenge

President Obama will not accept the ice bucket challenge from Ethel Kennedy, according to Matt Viser of the Boston Globe.

Obama was nominated for the challenge by Ethel Kennedy, who in a short video posted on her grandson’s Facebook page welcomed the President to Cape Cod with the challenge of dumping a bucket of ice water on his head to raise awareness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Maxwell Taylor Kennedy, son of late sen. Robert Kennedy, posted a video on Facebook of him and his family dumping buckets of ice water over their heads as part of a social media movement to raise awareness about Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS. Kennedy's mother, Ethel, challenged President Obama to do the same. (Facebook/Maxwell Taylor Kennedy)

The social media trend quickly caught on after friends and relatives of former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates started dumping ice-cold buckets of water on their heads to raise awareness for the degenerative disease, which Frates was diagnosed with in 2012. Other celebrities have completed the ice bucket challenge, including Martha Stewart and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.
