Decency shows through

Yesterday, Rick Santorum was with his daughter as she struggled to survive double pneumonia. Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin and Texas Gov. Rick Perry put out supportive statements urging prayers for the Santorums. Newt Gingrich, though, put out nothing publicly, instead going on the Sunday talk shows to suggest Santorum should get out of the race because of his low poll numbers.

I asked Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond if Gingrich regretted calling for Santorum to get out while he was tending to an ill child and why he hadn’t put out anything publicly since Santorum’s daughter Bella was admitted to the hospital Saturday night. He replied cryptically, “Contact was made privately.” I reached Santorum advisor Hogan Gidley this morning. He said, “I can tell you both the Paul and Romney campaigns reached out to us. As of 6 p.m. Sunday the Gingrich camp had not.” He added that the Santorums deeply appreciated his opponents’ concern. Santorum is on a plane and could not be reached to confirm when, if ever Gingrich, contacted him. I will update once Santorum is reachable.
