Dog days of summer

The economy is in a tailspin. The stock market is going to the dogs. And Washington, D.C., is quiet in August. (The last part is the good news.)

So what better time to put partisanship aside and have a little fun? Now and then through the remainder of the summer, we’ll feature a pet and his or her political owner. (Democrats and even cats are welcome.)

We’ll start off (only because his owner’s staff seems to work weekends in the summer) with Ginger:

Sharp-eyed readers will recognize Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell at the Governor’s Mansion in Richmond. His spokesman tells me that Ginger is a 13-year-old terrier. Does she go to the office? The governor’s spokesman deadpans, “No, she hangs at the Mansion all day, but that’s quite often the site of a lot of work, so she’s never far from the action.”
