Yesterday, some progress was reported in the debt-ceiling negotiations led by Vice President Joe Biden. However, the White House still wants tax hikes that Republicans have rejected. The White House may want a deal on Medicare while Democratic lawmakers would like to keep that issue burning for the campaign. Republicans want steep cuts in domestic spending that Democrats view as unacceptable.
