Morning Bits

The reality of the Obama economy. “The ranks of America’s poor are on track to climb to levels unseen in nearly half a century, erasing gains from the war on poverty in the 1960s amid a weak economy and fraying government safety net.Census figures for 2011 will be released this fall in the critical weeks ahead of the November elections.”

A dose of reality. “Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) said Sunday he doubted tougher gun control laws would have averted the movie-house killings in Aurora, Colo., speculating the attacker could have found various ways to perpetrate a massacre.”

In reality, it is a matter of priorities. Former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton: “I think [Romney’s] simple presence in Israel says it all. Obama has been in office three and a half years and he has had time to do more fundraisers than any other first-term American president; has probably played more rounds of golf than any other president since Dwight Eisenhower. And yet he has not had time to fit into his busy schedule even one trip to Israel.”

The reality is that Iran and its surrogates are getting bolder. “Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that his government has gathered ‘unquestionable’ intelligence showing that the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, backed by Iran, was behind a suicide bombing in Bulgaria last week that killed five Israeli nationals.”

Reality is not as neat as we’d like. “Over the next several days, you will be hit with all sorts of evidence fragments suggesting one motive or another. Don’t believe any one detail. Mr. Holmes has already been described as a loner. Proceed with caution on that. Nearly every shooter gets tagged with that label, because the public is convinced that that’s the profile, and people barely acquainted with the gunman parrot it back to every journalist they encounter. The Secret Service report determined that it’s usually not true. Resist the temptation to extrapolate details prematurely into a whole.”

Obama has no conception of the reality of the high tech industry from which he raises so much money. “President Barack Obama’s attack on challenger Mitt Romney as an ‘outsourcing pioneer’ and an ‘outsourcer-in-chief’ is unlikely to get a rousing reception when he stumps in Silicon Valley Monday. The rhetoric might win hearts and minds in swing states like Pennsylvania, Iowa or Florida, where the pain of unemployment is sharp. But it doesn’t play well in the nation’s offshoring capital, where Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Intel and other tech firms embrace globalization as a way of life.” Maybe the execs should stop giving money to a president who demonizes them.

In reality Obama doesn’t have a plan to refine.”Stymied at U.N., U.S. Refines Plan to Remove Assad.”

The grim reality is that you don’t need an “assault” weapon to kill lots of people. “The law enforcement official said authorities believe [James] Holmes first used the shotgun — some victims in the hospital have buckshot wounds — and then began using the assault rifle, which jammed. Then he resorted to the handgun.”
