President Obama’s mess. “More than three weeks after attacks in this city killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, sensitive documents remained only loosely secured in the remains of the U.S. mission here on Wednesday, offering visitors easy access to delicate details about American operations in Libya. . . . No government-provided security forces are guarding the compound, and Libyan investigators have visited just once, according to a member of the family who owns the compound and who allowed the journalists to enter Wednesday.”
Obama really messed up if Maureen Dowd is snarling at him. “The Obama administration sidestepped Al Qaeda ties in the case of the Libyan attack to perpetuate the narrative that the president had decimated Al Qaeda when Osama bin Laden was killed, and to preclude allegations that they were asleep at the switch on the anniversary of 9/11. Better to blame it all on a spontaneous protest to an anti-Islam video on YouTube.”
Is Bill Clinton messing with Obama’s “recovery” theme? He just can’t help strolling down memory lane and burnishing his image. “They would love it if real family median income were not where it was in 1995. They would love it, to see an America growing again with new jobs again and rising wages again. And they would love to get that tax bill because it would mean that they were moving on up and so were their kids.”
I don’t think a lot of people want to admit they messed up when they voted for Obama in 2008. The Republican Jewish Coalition is out with another buyer’s remorse ad, but is this proving effective?
Not only did the administration mess up in Libya, but it still can’t keep national security secrets. “Small teams of special operations forces arrived at American embassies throughout North Africa in the months before militants launched the fiery attack that killed the U.S. ambassador in Libya. The soldiers’ mission: Set up a network that could quickly strike a terrorist target or rescue a hostage. But the teams had yet to do much counterterrorism work in Libya, though the White House signed off a year ago on the plan to build the new military task force in the region and the advance teams had been there for six months, according to three U.S. counterterror officials and a former intelligence official.”
Yeah, the economy is still a mess. “Retail hiring activity continued to weaken in September, reflecting broader labor-market troubles, in what could be a worrisome development for the upcoming holiday season.”
And when their economic future is messy, people defer having kids. “U.S. births fell for the fourth year in a row, the government reported Wednesday, with experts calling it more proof that the weak economy has continued to dampen enthusiasm for having children.” The good news is that in 18 years these kids won’t have that much competition getting into college.
