The Obama spin squad in the media and in left-leaning interest groups never learns. Again and again its members have carried the president’s water to the detriment of their own credibility, only to be undercut when the president abandons the spin, leaving his sycophants high and dry.

There was the sequester — a virtual apocalypse, according to the White House dictation takers. Then it wasn’t. At all.

There was Syria. He was flexible and didn’t look weak at all! No foreign policy observer — including the Iranians, Russians, Israelis or Saudis — or any honest lawmaker or former official believed that. The spin squad gamely kept up the pretense and then moved on to another topic.

The most recent example was the big Obamacare promise. He didn’t lie about keeping your insurance, the spin squad members parroted. A couple of weeks later, Obama confessed that, yes, he sort of mislead people. Oops.

Likewise, the Obama fan boys and gals insisted Obamacare was inviolate — the law of the land. And wouldn’t you know, there is Obama a few days later amending Obamacare in the White House press room.

Now it is immigration. The lefties seized on a piece of non-news, namely the speaker of the House’s reminder that the House did not intend to go to conference on one big immigration bill, as evidence that immigration reform was dead. Republicans killed it! They spun that one for a few days. Then at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council meeting, Obama cut their legs out from under them, telling the audience: “Now, I actually think that there are a number of House Republicans, including Paul Ryan, I think, if you ask him about it, who agree with [the contents of the Senate bill]. They’re suspicious of comprehensive bills, but you know what? If they want to chop that thing up into five pieces, as long as all five pieces get done, I don’t care what it looks like, as long as it’s actually delivering on those core values that we talk about.” Spin squad, you’re foiled again!

You would think liberal elites who fancy themselves as sophisticated and project an air of cynicism would wise up sooner or later, realizing they are routinely taken for a ride — just like all the Joe-six-packs in fly-over country. A White House consumed by partisanship and indifferent to the truth will say anything to anyone to get through another news cycle. It is heady stuff, I guess, to be asked to run with the White House message. But maybe next time the liberal scribes and talking heads should tell them, “Carry your own water.” Had they done that months (or years) ago, the liberal elites now would look a whole lot less foolish and the White House would not have been lulled into a sense of political certainty that it could get away with anything.

The music stopped. It always does. The facts and the White House’s gross incompetence caught up with them. Now the presidency is in crisis mode. No spin will save them now.
