Alongside G-8 protests, a dispute over prom

I got to Frederick early this morning to park myself in town before the alleged G-8 protests begin. Picked up a copy of the Frederick News-Post: “County gears up for G-8 deluge,” a front page headline blared. Another: “Tension in the air as summit convenes.”

(Lisa Bolton)

Could be an interesting day. I didn’t pack my gas mask.

But buried down in the bottom righthand corner of the front page I found news of another protest, this one not exactly connected to the ire aimed at 1 percenters: “Brunswick seniors to stage Prom 2.0,” the headline said.

It seems Brunswick’s seniors were not stoked by the lighting and music choices at the official Brunswick prom not long ago. The European economy might be on the brink of collapse, but that doesn’t matter all that much in Frederick County. Prom, however, does.

Too much country music -- that was one of the specific complaints. Another: Students had to wear wristbands and if they were caught dancing incorrectly -- “squatting, bending, freaking, grinding, touching of the breasts, buttocks, or genitals or simulating sexual activity” -- the bands were cut and that was essentially the end of prom night fun for them.

Prom goers told the paper they felt “oppressed,” which is similar to the language G-8 protesters will presumably use today, but for somewhat different reasons.

So what will Prom 2.0 be like?

“Attendees will not sport prom dresses and tuxedos; the theme is ‘police-ish,’ complete with caution tape draping the walls as students give themselves an opportunity to dance the way they like,” the paper said.

With the help of some parents, students are renting a city park building to hold Prom 2.0 tomorrow night. Parents will chaperone.

At least in one spot of Frederick County this weekend, oppression will end.
