Despite the street parties and aged-rum tastings that have taken up most of Harry’s time during his tour of Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica, the prince has also had some serious diplomatic encounters over the past two days.
His trip, part of the Diamond Jubilee tour to honor his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne, included a private lunch with Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller on Tuesday.
Simpson Miller has sparked debate on whether the queen should remain Jamaica’s head of state, announcing her belief that the prime minister should serve in that role following her swearing-in on Jan. 6.
“I think the fact that August coming will be 50 years since we have gained our independence, that it’s time for us to sever the ties,” Simpson Miller told the Associated Press in an interview.
On Wednesday, Harry made last-minute changes to his schedule while at a military camp in Jamaica after learning of the deaths of six British soldiers in Afghanistan.
A press officer told the Associated Press that the 27-year-old British army captain would not rappel down a training wall as planned, out of respect for the soldiers. Harry did, however, participate in target practice, scoring a 39 out of 40 on two targets, with a field of reporters and cameramen looking on.
Before his private luncheon, the notorious prankster did find some time for a little practical joke. Harry “beat” the famous Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt in a race, giving himself an enormous head start as the three-time Olympic gold medal sprinter stood mock-stunned at the blocks.
