Prince William and Kate Middleton: The Engagement

In November, Prince William announced that he was officially engaged to longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, whom he had met at St. Andrews University. How did he propose? Why did he take so long to pop the question? We’ve got the answers to all your engagement questions.

Full wedding coverage is available here.

When did the proposal happen?

The couple became engaged during a private holiday to Kenya in October 2010. Will had been carrying the ring around with him for three weeks before that and had decided not to ask Kate’s father, because he was worried he would say no.

Why did Prince William wait so long to propose?

“I wanted to give her a chance” to witness the incredible pressure of living in a fishbowl and, if she didn't think she could handle it, “to back out.”

Was Kate surprised at the proposal, or had they discussed it for a long time?

Their decision to become engaged was a mutual one. But the actual timing of the proposal was a surprise by Prince William. Kate says she did not expect it.

Did Prince William choose the engagement ring? Why that particular one?

The engagement ring belonged to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who passed it to Prince William and Prince Harry. The ring is an oval cluster ring with a sapphire centre and a border of 14 diamonds, mounted in 18ct white gold. “It was my way of keeping her close to it all,”William said of his mother's memory. “It’s beautiful. I just hope I look after it. It’s very, very special,” Kate says.

Is there an official engagement photo?

Yes. The official engagement photos were taken by Mario Testino at St. James's Palace. You can see the photo here.
