D.C. United news & notes

*So FedEx Field will host a major friendly this year. What about RFK Stadium? D.C. United is exploring the possibility of a match on July 27-29 between the MLS side and an international opponent.

Other dates are under consideration, as well, but the window of opportunity appears narrower this year. Last summer United played Ajax and Everton. The year before, it was AC Milan, Portsmouth and El Salvador’s national team. However, fewer European clubs are seeking U.S. tours this summer and outside events (World Cup qualifying, Olympics, U.S. Open Cup) fill the calendar.

As part of the season ticket plan, United promises three non-regular season matches, though not necessarily international friendlies. Late-round Open Cup games and the MLS playoffs are among the club’s options.

The Washington Redskins, who are hosting the USA-Brazil friendly in May, are also seeking a club exhibition in late July.

Charlie Davies expresses disappointment about how 2011 MLS season ended and D.C. United’s handling of his situation

Charlie Davies isn’t playing for D.C. United anymore, but in an interview with MLS ExtraTime Radio, the French-based American striker had plenty of thoughts to share about his one season in Washington and his role under Coach Ben Olsen.

Initially in the interview, Davies expressed appreciation to United for taking him on loan from Sochaux and providing an opportunity to return to first-team soccer after his recovery from the October 2009 car accident that severely injured him.

“It was a wonderful experience for me,” he said, adding that “Benny was good for me.”

But his tone began to turn when asked about the process in which United declined an option to purchase his contract or extend the loan

“They never really told me what they were feeling. They never exactly came to me and said, ‘You know, we’re going to keep you, we’re not going to keep you and see what happens.’ I kind of got the feeling they were planning on trying to keep me and maybe get a trade going [in MLS]. … I was in the dark, and all of a sudden, my agent called and said they weren’t going to take the option.”

United States to play Brazil in soccer friendly at FedEx Field

The U.S. men’s national soccer team will play Brazil in a May 30 friendly at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., the five-time world champion’s first visit to Washington since 1998 and the Americans’ debut at the Redskins stadium.

Kickoff for the Wednesday night fixture is 8 p.m., with TV coverage on ESPN2 and Univision. Tickets, ranging from $40 to $135, will go on sale next Friday via Ticketmaster and ussoccer.com. D.C. United’s full season ticket holders will receive advanced access.

The United States has defeated Brazil once in 16 all-time meetings, the victory coming in a 1998 Gold Cup match in Los Angeles.

The game falls between U.S. friendlies against Scotland at home in late May and at Canada on June 3 in Toronto.

The Americans will then begin their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign with the first two of six semifinal-round games: Antigua & Barbuda on June 8 at home and Guatemala four days later in Guatemala City.

The venues for the Scotland and Antigua matches will be revealed next week.

Fabio Capello resigns as England men’s soccer manager

Just four months before the start of the 2012 European Championship, Fabio Capello has resigned as manager of the England national men’s soccer team, the Football Association announced in a statement.

The FA said in the statement that Capello met with chairman David Bernstein and General Secretary Alex Horne at Wembley Stadium.

On Friday, John Terry was removed as England’s captain by Bernstein. Terry, who plays professionally for Chelsea, is awaiting a criminal trial over allegations that he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match. That trial is not slated to begin until July, after Euro 2012.

In an interview on Italian television on Sunday night, Capello said he disagreed with Bernstein’s decision and that no decision should have been made until after Terry’s trial.

“I told [the chairman] that I don’t think someone can be punished until it becomes official,” Capello told RAI. “The court will decide. It’s going to be civil justice, not sports justice, to decide if John Terry committed that crime that he is accused of. And I thought it fair that John Terry keeps the captain’s armband.”
