U.S.-Germany match will go on as scheduled despite heavy rains

recifefoodingRECIFE, Brazil — Despite heavy rains and flooding in surrounding areas, Thursday’s World Cup match between the United States and Germany will go ahead as scheduled, a FIFA person said.

The game is scheduled to get underway at noon Eastern time.

A spokesman for the U.S. men’s national team said officials inspected the pitch at Arena Pernambuco shortly after arriving and descibed it as “soft, but holding up pretty well so far.”

The roads in Recife were flooded with waters and traffic was gridlocked in many places. Fans were scrambling to line up transportation Thursday morning, hoping to get to the stadium in time.

The stadium is located about 12 1/2 miles from the airport and while rain was in the forecast for most of the afternoon, conditions near the stadium appeared much better than in the city center.

Well, maybe the sample size is hardly big enough to a call it a curse, but the four teams who played in the first two games in the Amazonian heat and humidity of Manaus all went on to lose their next games by a total of of 10-3.
