Alex Morgan scores late in extra time as U.S. women’s soccer team defeats Canada, 4-3, to advance to Olympic gold medal match

After a pair of pulsating semifinal matches Monday, including an epic encounter between the United States and Canada at Old Trafford, the Olympic women’s soccer gold medal match is set:

United States vs. Japan

When: Thursday, 2:45 p.m. ET.

Where: Wembley Stadium, London.

TV: NBC Sports Network, NBC Olympic Soccer Channel, nbcolympics.com

In a rematch of the World Cup final last summer in Germany, the Americans will have to overcome the physical and emotional toll of playing 120+ bruising minutes against Canada. [NBC’s video package is available here.]

The USA and world champion Japan have already met twice this year: a 1-0 Japan victory at the Alvarve Cup in Portugal in March — the Americans’ only loss in 21 outings in 2012 — and a 1-1 draw in Sendai, Japan, in April.
