Charlie Davies sidelined with groin injury

D.C. United forward Charlie Davies, who scored three goals in the first two matches, will not play against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday because of a minor groin injury, the MLS club announced.

Davies, the team’s leading scorer despite serving as a substitute, withdrew from Saturday’s training session in Washington and did not accompany the delegation to Denver. United officials are confident he will be ready for Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup qualifier against the Philadelphia Union at Maryland SoccerPlex or Saturday’s league match with the Los Angeles Galaxy at RFK Stadium.

With Davies unavailable, United will be without five regulars against the Rapids: Defenders Jed Zayner (hamstring), Dejan Jakovic (red card) and Perry Kitchen (U.S. under-20 duty), and midfielder Clyde Simms (calf) are the others.

The match will kick off at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on Spanish-language Galavision.
