D.C. United news & notes: Branko Boskovic, trialists, Ethan White, reserve match, podcast

*D.C. United and midfielder Branko Boskovic are nearing a new contract. General Manager Dave Kasper confirmed to the Insider on Tuesday that the sides are closing in on a deal. The current pact expires July 15. Specifics have not been shared publicly, but it’s probably safe to assume Boskovic, 32, has agreed to a pay cut. He is currently second on the team with a base salary of $409,000 and guaranteed compensation of more than $545,000.

*Two trialists have arrived:

— Mexican defender Gienir Garcia, 22, who rose through Cruz Azul’s system and the under-20 national team before playing in Mexico’s second division and then moving to MLS this year with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact.

— French 6-foot-4 defender Xavier Tomas, 26, who has played in Greece’s first second division.

*Defender Ethan White, on loan for two matches to third-division Richmond, played 90 minutes in the Kickers’ 3-2 home loss to the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday. He will rejoin the Kickers for a July 3 game against the visiting Los Angeles Blues.

*Aside from Saturday’s league match at RFK Stadium, United and the Impact will meet in a reserve game at 11 a.m. Sunday at the RFK training grounds. Admission is free. It’s just the third reserve match for United, which has had to postpone several dates because of injuries and scheduling issues.

*Saturday’s match, United’s final home appearance in league play until Aug. 4, will be carried live at 7:30 p.m. ET by Comcast SportsNet in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

*Yours truly was the guest on the Capital Soccer Show, which is available through streaming audio on United’s Web site.

*Coming later on the Insider: Hamdi Salihi’s reaction to the large group of fellow Albanians who were at Red Bull Arena on Sunday night. Albanians in America? Who knew!
