Greetings from RFK Stadium. D.C. United is in town for a few days between training camps in Florida and Arizona. Most of the players will be available for interviews soon. For now, a few updates:
*Reserve midfielder Kurt Morsink will undergo foot surgery today in Baltimore and probably miss four to six weeks. He said he hopes to return in three to five.
*I got my first glimpse of 6-foot-4 Argentine defender Emiliano Dudar. He is, indeed, a big dude. He sprained his ankle in training this week but was walking without a hitch today.
*Defender Jed Zayner, the starting right back at the beginning of last season, was released after being on trial for a month. Zayner is just not the same after suffering a knee injury last season.
*Defender Charles Rodriguez, a supplemental draft pick from Charlotte, and Danish midfielder Sebastien Svard were also cut. Trialists Lance Rozeboom (rookie midfielder from New Mexico), Ryan Richter (midfielder-defender-forward from the Philadelphia Union), Seth C’deBaca (midfielder from Georgetown) and Andrew Dykstra (goalkeeper formerly with the Chicago Fire) were invited to the Arizona camp, which commences Tuesday.
The club hasn’t decided whether to retain goalkeeper Josh Lambo, who is not with the team in Washington.
Midfielder Marcelo Saragosa and forward Stefan Jerome remain in contention.
*United will play Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake while in Arizona.
*The club is hopeful newly acquired forward Hamdi Salihi will be able to join his teammates in Arizona. He is awaiting a work visa.
*Where do things stand with contract negotiations involving 2011 MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario? “We’re talking to get him where he feels a little better about the contract,” Coach Ben Olsen said. Asked if DeRo has been distracted by the unsettled situation, Olsen said: “No. Dwayne has been fantastic. He has been absolutely great this preseason. He continues to lead this bunch.”
