Gold Cup: United States vs. Canada

It’s Gold Cup matchnight #3 with the Group C opening doubleheader featuring Panama vs. Guadeloupe (6 p.m. ET, Galavision) and the United States vs. Canada (8 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel, Telefutura). Besides the live TV coverage, both matches are available online through univisionfutbol.com and concacaf.com.

So far, we’ve seen three lopsided results — Mexico and Costa Rica won by five goals, Jamaica by four — and one mild surprise as nine-man Guatemala drew with Honduras. (If only Andy Najar had been called in by the Catrachos!) The Americans are favored to win — they haven’t lost to Canada since 1985 — but expect a tight match.

How do the U.S. players perceive Canada?

“They are very much in our mold — a dogged, hard-working team, some European experience, some MLS guys,” goalkeeper Tim Howard said. “I think it will be an interesting game. Physically, it will definitely be a good battle.”

We won’t learn the U.S. starters and seven eligible subs until about an hour before kickoff. My guess: Howard; Cherundolo, Onyewu, Goodson, Bocanegra; Dempsey, Edu, Bradley, Donovan; Agudelo, Altidore.

USA’s pregame inspiration provided by Frankie Hejduk. As for the temporary grass, it’s various shades of green and brown — like 1970s furniture. The players said Monday that it should play fine.

Back later with the official lists.

USA: Howard; Cherundolo, Ream, Goodson, Bocanegra; Dempsey, Jones, Bradley, Donovan; Agudelo, Altidore. Subs: Hahnemann, Lichaj, Onyewu, Edu, Bedoya, Kljestan, Wondolowski. Not in uniform: Spector, Bornstein, Rogers, Adu.
