Liverpool, Tottenham to play in Baltimore

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, two of the English Premier League’s marquee clubs, will meet in a July 28 friendly at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore — the same day league rival Chelsea is tentatively scheduled to face Italian titan AC Milan 32 miles away at FedEx Field in Landover and the same weekend as a possible D.C. United friendly.

The Baltimore match will kick off at 1 p.m., an early start because the Orioles host the Oakland Athletics that evening at the adjacent baseball park at Camden Yards. Tickets for the soccer event will go on sale Tuesday through Ticketmaster and the Baltimore Ravens.

Charm City hosted two major friendlies in recent years: Chelsea vs. AC Milan in 2009 and Manchester City vs. Inter Milan the following summer.

Under Armour, the Maryland-based sports apparel company that will sponsor Tottenham’s jerseys next season, arranged for the visit to Baltimore. Spurs’ U.S. tour also includes matches against the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls.

Liverpool is set to play Italian side Roma at Fenway Park on July 25.

The possibility of a Liverpool-Spurs match was first reported by the Insider early this month.

Chelsea this week posted details of the AC Milan friendly at FedEx Field on its Web site, then abruptly pulled them down. The contract apparently hasn’t been signed by the Washington Redskins, who own the 82,000-seat stadium. Assuming the deal is finalized, the match would likely take place in the evening.

Meantime, United has been exploring opportunities for a friendly the same weekend. Club officials declined to comment on whether the other two matches in the area are impacting their plans.
