Matchday #1: D.C. United vs. Columbus Crew

Greetings from Estadio RFK! It’s been a while since I’ve typed it or you’ve read it and I think there is a true amount of excitement around tonight season-opener at RFK Stadium.

I walked around the tailgating scene for a few minutes with one Mr. Dan Steinberg earlier and there were a few themes that popped up in the conversations with fans and regulars. There is an undeniable buzz about this team and certainly plenty of question marks. People aren’t sure just how good this team is going to be, but they know it’s going to be better than last year. The key words that popped up in every conversation, though? Charlie Davies. People want to see him play, people want D.C. United to be a part of his comeback story. And it’s a storyline that’s going to be among the most compelling across all sports this year.

The weather is nice, though I expect it to get a bit nippy once the sun goes down. United is expecting between 15-17,000 in attendance tonight. The impression I get from fans is that number, a bit low, could see an increase with a few wins. We’ll see if that can start tonight.

Kickoff: 7:30 PM

TV: CSN

DCU Lineup: Onstad; Zayner, Jakovic, Kitchen, Burch; Najar, Simms, McCarty (C), Pontius; Wolff, Ngwenya. Subs: Davies, Quaranta, Boskovic, Brasesco, Morsink, Brettschneider, Willis

As usual this is your place for pregame, in-game and postgame commentary.
