MLS All-Stars vs. Chelsea FC

A leftover anecdote that didn’t make it into my feature story about MLS all-star coach Ben Olsen’s upbringing in central Pennsylvania:

Olsen’s father Dana retired after 33 years in the state’s Department of Public Welfare helping individuals with mental disabilities. Olsen’s mother Carol was a teacher’s aide in special education before becoming the secretary at a Catholic church and school. Olsen’s sister Erin worked with autistic children before turning her full attention to her two young kids. Olsen’s brother Jeremy works with underprivileged youth in Camden, N.J.

To which Ben says, “I always think about what they have all done. I’m like, ‘What a joke I am living!’ I laughed when I got that [MLS] humanitarian award [in 2003], and my family, all they do is help other people.”

*Fourteen MLS players were named inactive all-stars, meaning they’ll receive bonuses but won’t participate in tonight’s festivities and match against Chelsea at PPL Park. The collective bargaining agreement stipulates the naming of at least 32 “all-stars,” which compensates for the absence of two all-star squads.

*TV tonight: ESPN2, ESPN3.com and Telefutura. Coverage begins at 8:30 p.m. ET. Kickoff is at 8:50.

MLS: Nielsen; Beitashour, Collin, DeMerit, Morrow; Alonso, Beckham, De Rosario, Donovan; Henry, Wondolowski. Subs: Kennedy, Corrales, Valdes, Zusi, Farfan, Pontius, Beckerman, Johnson.

CHELSEA: Hilario; Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic, Cole; Essien, Ramires, Lampard, Benayoun, Marin; Lukaku. Subs: Turnbull, Meireles, Malouda, Luiz, De Bruyne, Piazon, Ferreira, Hazard, Mikel, Chalobah.
