New York Red Bulls approached about playing in Arsenal’s Emirates Cup

The New York Red Bulls have been approached about participating in the Arsenal-hosted Emirates Cup in London this summer, multiple sources told the Insider.

The Red Bulls “have been considered for an invitation but nothing is set in stone,” one source said.

The four-team tournament, which launched in 2007, is staged in late July/early August at Emirates Stadium and serves as a preseason test for major clubs. No team from outside of Europe has ever competed in it.

The Red Bulls do not have any MLS or U.S. Open Cup matches scheduled between July 24 and Aug. 5. The primary attraction from a New York appearance would be French forward Thierry Henry, who starred for Arsenal from 1999 to 2007.

Past participants have included Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Rangers and Celtic. Last year, Arsenal won the trophy by drawing with AC Milan and defeating Celtic. Lyon was the fourth entry.

A Red Bulls spokesman said the club didn’t want to comment. An MLS spokesman said he was unaware of the situation.
