Nick DeLeon’s first career goal for D.C. United had much in common with Chris Pontius’s first goal in 2009

The eerie similarities on the first career goals by D.C. United’s Nick DeLeon (last weekend) and Chris Pontius (2009):

Both players were making their MLS debut.

Both goals came in United’s first away match.

Both matches were against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Both goals were scored in the second half at the north end of Home Depot Center.

Both players are left-side midfielders.

Both were selected No. 7 overall in the MLS draft two months earlier.

Both curled right-footed shots to the far post.

Both scored on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Southern California.

Both matches were seen nationally on Spanish TV outlets (Pontius on Telefutura, DeLeon on Galavision).

DeLeon replaced Pontius in the lineup in the second half.

No comparison in hair styles: DeLeon wins easily. And let’s hope DeLeon never breaks his leg at HDC (as Pontius did last year).
