Thursday kickaround: MLS, CONCACAF, Americans abroad, Maryland Terrapins, TV listings

*The MLS roster deadline is upon us: 5 p.m. ET today. Maybe we need a dramatic countdown clock like CNN’s doomsday ticker in the government default crisis last month. There’s some trade buzz out there, but whether clubs make significant moves remains to be seen. Once 5 p.m. arrives, rosters are frozen until the day after MLS Cup.

*The Eastern Conference race continues to lack clarity after the 10-man Columbus Crew drew at home with the Houston Dynamo, 2-2. The Crew moved back into first place, a point ahead of Sporting Kansas City, while the Dynamo, which received a late equalizer by Calen Carr, tied the Philadelphia Union for third place. However, Houston has played two more matches than Philly and four more than D.C. United, which is just two points behind.

*United’s next opponent, the Seattle Sounders, remained unbeaten in CONCACAF Champions League group play with a 2-1 victory at Costa Rica’s Herediano. Meantime, Dallas settled for a 1-1 home draw with Panama’s Tauro and Toronto FC was blasted by Pumas, 4-0.

For Americans abroad, college soccer and TV listings.....

*Americans abroad: Defenders Edgar Castillo (Club America) and Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis) played 90 minutes apiece in a 2-2 draw. In UEFA Europa League today:

GK Brad Friedel and Spurs at PAOK Salonica

D Oguchi Onyewu and Sporting Lisbon at Zurich

MF Clint Dempsey and Fulham vs. Twente

MF Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht vs. AEK Athens

MF Jonathan Spector and Birmingham vs. Braga

MF Jermaine Jones and Schalke at Steaua Bucharest

F Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar vs. Malmo

*In women’s college soccer tonight, No. 6 Maryland (6-0-2) visits No. 14 Virginia (6-1-1) in the ACC opener in Charlottesville.

*Maryland’s men and women are sporting some colorful footwear.
