Top-ranked Maryland Terrapins defeat Virginia Tech Hokies, 2-0, to remain undefeated

Top-ranked Maryland resumed its winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Virginia Tech, extending its unbeaten streak to nine. John Stertzer and Casey Townsend scored for the Terrapins (8-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 in the ACC), who drew at Seton Hall during the week. They’ll welcome two ranked non-conference opponents to Ludwig Field this coming week: Charlotte (7-1-0) on Tuesday and Creighton (8-0-0, no goals against) on Friday.

Elsewhere, No. 23 Georgetown (5-1-2) opened Big East play with a 2-0 victory at Villanova. ... George Mason (4-2-2) upset No. 15 and previously unbeaten Old Dominion, 1-0. ... I don’t usually write about Mount St. Mary’s (Md.), but this is worthy: Freshman Zoncher Dennis tied a program record with four goals in a 5-0 victory over La Salle.

Today in women’s soccer, 14th-ranked Virginia (7-2-1) visits No. 6 North Carolina (6-1-0). ESPNU will provide live coverage at 3 p.m. ET.
