Wednesday kickaround: D.C. United, Tim Howard, Everton, Women’s World Cup, Claudio Reyna, TV listings

*Austin da Luz, a second-year midfielder acquired by D.C. United from the New York Red Bulls this week, grew up a United fan and often traveled with his family — including his father, the longtime women’s coach at Wake Forest — from their home in North Carolina to RFK Stadium. This is his story.

*The Capital Weather Gang has the steamy forecast for tonight’s match between United and the New England Revolution.

*DCU Coach Ben Olsen, on facing a last-place opponent: “If we’re not ready for a team that is down on their lucky and angry and very focused on battling and grinding out a result, we’re going to be in trouble. It’s that simple. We’re in no position to take any team lightly in this league. We’re in no position to think this is going to be an easy one.”

*USA goalkeeper Tim Howard won’t play for Everton in tonight’s friendly against the Philadelphia Union and, Coach David Moyes suggests, won’t suit up Saturday against United either. Through one of his representatives, Howard said he could end up playing Saturday but that it would be Moyes’s decision.

*Winner: Women’s World Cup. Loser: Baseball all-star game. TV details from Post writer Lisa de Moraes.

*A crowd of 15,000 is expected for Abby Wambach’s homecoming to Rochester, N.Y., tonight for the WPS match between the Western New York Flash and the Team Formerly Known as the Washington Freedom (7:30 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel).

*Happy 38th birthday to former U.S. national team captain Claudio Reyna.
