World Cup qualifying: U.S. national team at Guatemala

For those who haven’t been paying attention to the TV situation for the U.S. national team’s World Cup qualifier at Guatemala tonight, there’s still time to order the match through your cable/satellite/Internet provider or scamper over to your favorite watering hole.

Otherwise, stick with me. I dished out the $29.95 for pay-per-view so you didn’t have to. As quickly as possible, I will post match updates throughout the evening.

Kickoff is at 10 p.m. ET.

In the other Group A match tonight, Jamaica earned a point at Antigua and Barbuda, 0-0. The Reggae Boyz are on four points, the Benna Boys on one through two games. Both Jamaica matches in September are against the United States (in Kingston and Columbus), while A&B will play Guatemala twice.

USA: Howard; Cherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra, Johnson; Edu, Bradley, Jones; Donovan, Dempsey, Gomez.

Subs: Guman, Cameron, Parkhurst, Onyewu, Corona, Beckerman, Torres, Altidore, Wondolowski.

Not in uniform: Rimando, Castillo, Boyd.

GUA: Jerez, Vasquez, Morales, L. Rodriguez, Gallardo, Velasquez, Contreras, Avila, Figueroa, M. Rodriguez, Ruiz.

Your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts are welcome in our comments section.

KICKOFF: We’re underway!

1st: Dempsey with clever touch at midfield and then receives bruising challenge — just the beginning.

3rd: Carlos Ruiz (remember him?) from 30 yards streaks over the bar.

5th: Donovan corner kick cleared, launching promising Guatemala counter that runs out of steam.

6th: Howard under pressure sends clearance out of bounds. Guatemala quick throw-in but no threat.

9th: Wonderful defending by Johnson, taking the ball of Velasquez’s foot near the end line and turning it back up field.

12th: Donovan another set piece, served deep into box, punched out by keeper.

15th: No serious threats by either side.

16th: Dempsey ambitious central run but heavy touch allows Chapines to clear from danger.

19th: Vasquez service to Rodriguez, 18-yard header well over the bar.

23rd: Goodson yellow card for hard challenge on Rodriguez.

25th: Dempsey strikes from 30 yards, well off target.

28th: Figueroa back to goal, deep in box, swarmed by three defenders.

29th: Bradley volley at the keeper from well beyond the box.

30th: Ruiz takes a dive. Draws foul on Goodson. Surprised?

31st: Ruiz free kick from 25 yards at Howard.

34th: USA laboring to establish an attacking rhythm. Not much combination work. Physical resistance from Guatemala.

38th: Superb save by Howard on Figueroa’s angled bid keeps the match scoreless.

40th: Clint Dempsey collects Johnson’s pass, steps past two challenges along the top of the box, moving to his right, stings low shot into left corner from 16 yards. Johnson created the opportunity, but pure individual brilliance by Dempsey stakes the Americans to the lead with his 27th international goal. 1-0, USA.

Added time: Ruiz creates a pocket of space at top of box, stings left-footer a yard wide of the right post.

46th: Second half is underway. Cameron on for Goodson. Leon, Pappa and Pezzarosi on for Guatemala.

48th: Guatemala header from 16 yards streaks over the crossbar.

54th: Guatemalan long ball into the box, Ruiz brings it down but Bocanegra intervenes. Ball pops up and appears to hit the captain’s hand, but not intentional and play continues.

62nd: Donovan drives set piece from distance into the box, punched out by keeper, who collides with a teammate and requires medical attention.

64th: Altidore comes on for Gomez.

69th: Pappa from 35 yards, deflected narrowly wide of the left post. On ensuing corner, Howard makes tremendous reaction save on Rodriguez deep in the box and Ruiz blasts rebound well over the bar — dreadful miss.

79th: After absorbing Guatemalan pressure, Americans controlling the pace.

79th: Altidore in alone, but referee halts play when Dempsey went down at top of box — play should’ve continued.

80th: Jones thumps 23-yard free kick deep into the night.

82nd: Johnson yellow card for knocking down Ruiz.

83rd: Chicago Fire’s Marco Pappa left-footed, 25-yard free kick — perfect. Bends it over the wall into the near right side. Howard didn’t move. 1-1.

85th: Bradley bursts into the left side of the box, crosses back toward Altidore, who had stopped his run.

89th: Pappa blistering one-timer from 25 yards goes wide.

FULL TIME: USA 1, Guatemala 1.
