Ruiz, 33, was most recently with Veracruz in Mexico in 2011-12. He has 88 regular season goals in his MLS career, tied for ninth on the career list. Ruiz is also the Guatemalan national team’s all-time leading scorer with 55 goals.
Available in MLS’s allocation process,
every 16 teams passed on the opportunity to sign “El Pescadito” (Little Fish) before United claimed him.
Ruiz was a scoring sensation between 2002 and ’07, recording 81 goals in six seasons (three with the Los Angeles Galaxy and three with FC Dallas). He also gained a well-deserved distinction for bringing disrepute to the sport for embellishing contact and taking dramatic falls in an attempt to draw fouls.
Ruiz played for Toronto and Los Angeles in 2008, scoring once in 15 appearances. He moved to Paraguay, Mexico and Greece in 2009-10 before signing with Philadelphia, where, in 2011, he scored six goals in 14 regular season matches.
Ruiz is scheduled to join United on Thursday in Lake Mary, Fla.
