In our latest installment of Soccer and Society, a periodic feature chronicling the intersection of the beautiful game and American life…..
*The new Pope is a San Lorenzo supporter. (My first guess was River Plate. Red shoes and all.)
Soon after the white smoke appeared in Vatican City, the Argentine club tweeted photos of Jorge Mario Bergoglio with a pennant and a picture of his membership card.
Soccer’s bonds with the Vatican are strong: Pope John Paul II‘s was a schoolboy goalkeeper in Poland. He backed second-tier KS Cracovia. Estadio Joao Paulo II, a small Portuguese stadium housing third-division SC Lusitania, is named for him.
*Tonight, while watching Todd Rundgren and later Joe Walsh on “Live from Daryl’s House” — Wife of Insider’s favorite featuring Daryl Hall and guests jamming on the Palladia channel — drummer Brian Dunne was wearing an Atletico Mineiro jersey. Very cool. (Even if you were never fond of Hall & Oates, “LFDH” is a fantastic music experience. Nick Lowe, Smokey Robinson, Jason Mraz, Dave Stewart and Guster have dropped by Hall’s upstate New York farmhouse over the years.)
*Brandi Chastain wasn’t known as a diver on the soccer field, but the former U.S. women’s national team defender will take the plunge as a late substitute on ABC’s celebrity diving competition. Diving, as into a pool. Can’t wait.
