Video of today’s strike:
*Winger Josh Gatt, a possible Gold Cup selection this summer, played the final 22 minutes of Molde’s 4-1 victory over Aalesund, the Norwegian club’s first victory after five losses and two draws. Gatt, 21, has started five matches.
*Forward Charlie Davies and Randers lost to Esbjerg in the Danish Cup final, 1-0. He did not start, and as far as I can tell from early online reports, didn’t play.
*In a Q&A on the USSF’s website, USA Coach Juergen Klinsmann reiterated he will invite between 23 and 25 players to training camp, starting May 21 at Home Depot Center. The extra bodies are in case of suspensions in the World Cup qualifiers — seven players are sitting on yellow cards.
Looking further ahead, he said he could take advantage of a new Gold Cup roster guideline that allows teams to change as many as four players after the group stage. The 23-man Gold Cup list will feature mostly MLS and Scandinavian players in league form.
“So right now you’re handling 45-50 players” between the May-June friendlies and qualifiers and then the Gold Cup in July, Klinsmann said. “You monitor them and put the rosters together based on how good of a rhythm they have right now, if they struggle with injuries.
“You never get your perfect picture, your perfect 23-player roster with 11 starters you have in mind. It’s not going to happen. So you have to evaluate the whole situation and make compromises.”
Player availability for training camp and the friendlies (May 29 vs. Belgium in Cleveland and June 2 vs. Germany in Washington) is complicated by late-season club commitments, most notably for Roma’s Michael Bradley in the Italian Cup final May 26 against Lazio and possibly Mexican-based players involved in the playoffs.
