Klinsmann announces Gold Cup roster

Juergen Klinsmann has named 23 players, including World Cup veterans Landon Donovan and Oguchi Onyewu, to the U.S. national team roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the biennial regional championship slated to begin July 7. Most of his regulars from the recent World Cup qualifying campaign were given time off before rejoining their European clubs for training camp.

Gold Cup preparations will begin Monday in San Diego and include a July 5 friendly against Guatemala at Qualcomm Stadium. Group matches are July 9 against Belize in Portland, Ore.; July 13 against Cuba in Sandy, Utah; and July 16 against Costa Rica in East Hartford, Conn.

With a first- or second-place finish, the Americans would play a quarterfinal in Baltimore on July 21. The semifinals are July 24 in Arlington, Tex., and the final four days later at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The 23-man roster was pulled from a 35-player preliminary list submitted several weeks ago. Gold Cup rules will allow coaches to make four changes after the group stage. All new additions must come from the 35-man list.

The 23-man roster is…..

Goalkeepers: Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake).

Defenders: Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Edgar Castillo (Tijuana), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg).

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsinborg), Joe Corona (Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Jose Torres (Tigres).

Forwards: Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Tijuana), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes).

Not chosen but eligible for selection after the group stage…..

Goalkeeper: Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo).

Defenders: Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy).

Midfielders: Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City), Brek Shea (Stoke City), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City).

Forwards: Alan Gordon (San Jose Earthquakes), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich).

Klinsmann’s comments about recalling Donovan:

“When Landon came back in the end of March after the long break, he needed time to get back in a rhythm, get back in shape and work on his game again. Now the process is on a good roll. He’s getting sharper every game and every week. We’ve watched his games and believe now is a good time to get him back into the national team and give him the opportunity to prove his point. He knows the group that played the World Cup qualifiers is ahead of the curve and has a very strong position right now, and that he’s been observed by us and has to rebuild his case. We have all respect for what he has done in the past, but sports are about the present and about the future.”

Klinsmann, on Bocanegra’s omission: “Carlos and I had a long talk. He is basically in the middle of another [club] move. He is going to leave, it looks like today. He is in the middle of making up his mind of where he wants to continue his career. We agreed to leave him out in order for him to have all options open to join a new team right away from the start” of a club training camp or the regular season (if MLS).

On whether he considered MLS scoring ace Mike Magee: “Mike is a player we follow, absolutely. He didn’t make it into the 35. We follow all the MLS games. We talk to the coaches. Mike is now in the picture as well but not for the Gold Cup.”

On the return of Onyewu:  “This is a big chance. I told him he needs to come in sharp and ready.”

Klinsmann, on how he will handle roster adjustments after group play. (He had agreed to not right away call in MLS players — Johnson, Zusi, Davis, Evans, Besler, Gonzalez — who were regulars in the qualifying stretch.)

“After the group stage, we have a much better picture. Maybe we have injuries, maybe we have problems with defense, maybe we struggle offensively. That is how we are going to make those decisions. There is nothing set in stone yet. … It is very likely [he will exercise the option of calling in four new players], but maybe things go extremely well with all 23 now — no injuries, no issues. It comes down to those 23 players to make their mark, to make their case and then we’ll see.”

Klinsmann said Shea will report to training camp in San Diego and be available for the Guatemala friendly but then return to Stoke City for preseason.
