*D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario (hip flexor) and Nick DeLeon (ankle) were not far enough along in their recovery to join the club in Denver ahead of Sunday night’s match against the Colorado Rapids. They had already missed the Seattle leg of the club’s western trip.

*Marcelo Saragosa returned to Washington with a sore knee, leaving United with 17 players. He will undergo additional testing. Coach Ben Olsen decided not to summon a replacement. “We have enough players here,” he said. Brandon McDonald and Syamsir Alam were the only available for recall.

*Dejan Jakovic (adductor) will miss an eighth consecutive league match.

*Chris Pontius was named to the U.S. national team’s alternate list for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and is among 12 players eligible for selection after the group stage. (Coaches have the option of making four roster changes for the knockout rounds.) With Josh Gatt scratched because of a knee injury, Juergen Klinsmann promoted Brek Shea to the 23-man tournament roster. Shea played in the 6-0 friendly victory against Guatemala on Friday night in San Diego and had been scheduled to report to Stoke City’s training camp next week. Instead, he will remain with the U.S. delegation.

*United’s Kyle Porter was promoted to Canada’s Gold Cup roster, replacing the injured Nana Attakora, but will not report unless needed, the Canadian federation said. Essentially, he is on-call and will remain with United for now.

*John Thorrington says he is ready to play after overcoming a slight hamstring injury and not featuring in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss at Seattle.

“It has responded well,” he said. “It was never too bad, but it would have been a risk playing mid-week, knowing we had this game so soon.”

*United’s Alain Rochat traveled from Seattle to Vancouver to be with his wife, who gave birth to their fourth child (two boys, two girls). He was scheduled to arrive in Denver on Saturday night.

*Jared Jeffrey, who signed this week from German club Mainz, will begin training Wednesday in Washington and probably play in Friday’s friendly against Chivas Guadalajara at RFK Stadium, Olsen said. “He is a versatile American midfielder who hopefully can grow into a player that can help us. Our goal is to get him [into the Chivas game] and a bunch of guys some minutes. It’s a good chance to try some things and to get his feet wet.”

*United will play its fifth match across 16 days Sunday (four MLS, one U.S. Open Cup) and has been away from home since Monday morning. The club trained an additional two days in Seattle before flying to Denver on Saturday.

“It’s a long drag, but we were in a fun place and there was stuff to do,” Thorrington said. “It’s hard being away from families, but we kept busy and we actually like hanging around with each other, which is a cool part of this team.”

Said Olsen: “They’ve got one more [game] in them before we get a break [from league play]. They deserve a break. People probably would not agree, but these guys have been through a lot. It’s important for them to see their families for a couple of days after this.”

*On-loan forward Michael Seaton, 17, scored in the 71st minute as the Richmond Kickers defeated the host Dayton Dutch Lions, 3-2, to remain the only unbeaten club in the top three divisions. Seaton has scored four goals in 11 USL matches for the Kickers (9-0-6).

*United is sharing summer misery with the Washington Spirit, which continues to slip into the NWSL abyss. With a 1-0 loss at first-place Sky Blue on Saturday night, the Spirit (1-8-4) was blanked for the sixth time in seven outings. The club will host the Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday night at Maryland SoccerPlex.

*Local TV on Sunday: Comcast SportsNet, 9:30 p.m. ET.

*Referee: Drew Fischer (bio).

*Weather outlook: 79 degrees, 37 percent humidity, 30 percent chance of rain.
