Dejan Jakovic, sidelined for eight league matches with an adductor strain, is vying to face the Fire after playing the second half against Chivas Guadalajara last Friday.
*United is taking another look at Jamaican defender O’Brian Woodbine, who will begin his second trial today. He plays on the left side but is right-footed and could provide cover elsewhere on the backline.
Sierra Leone international Sheriff Suma, a left-sided wing, will start a trial today. Scouting coordinator Kurt Morsink has monitored Suma, 26, for some time and Sporting Kansas City’s Kei Kamara, a Sierra Leone teammate, offered a recommendation, Olsen said.
The search for international assistance continues, with an eye on the long term.
“This is what [Morsink] does. We have a full-time guy. All day long he looks at foreign options. It’s too big of a world and too vast of a project for coaches and GMs to really do it thoroughly. We have a better database than ever and options, but we still have to be patient and make sure we are sticking to our plan and getting guys that are going to help us over the next two or three years.
“We’re not into Band-Aids right now. We want to get better yesterday, but we are still committed to getting guys that are going to make sense for the next couple of years.”
MLS’s international transfer window is open until Aug. 8.
*Despite an impressive DCU debut, 17-year-old forward Michael Seaton is slated to remain on loan with the third-division Richmond Kickers for the time being. He and defender Conor Shanosky are scheduled to travel west with the Kickers (10-0-7 in USL) for league matches at Phoenix on Friday, Los Angeles on Sunday and Vancouver against the Whitecaps reserves next Tuesday.
Midfielder Collin Martin, 18, who signed a homegrown contract last week, might join them as well, Olsen said.
I will have much more about Seaton’s emergence later.
*Syamsir Alam, who made his United debut last week, has reported to Indonesia’s under-23 national team for a six-week training camp. He might dress for the senior squad in friendlies against visiting European clubs. Despite Alam’s lack of playing time, Olsen said he expects him to return to Washington for the remainder of the regular season.
*Jakovic turns 28 today. Happy birthday, Dejan.
