First match at RFK in three weeks? How I’ve missed you, my old, rusty friend.

Since we last saw one another, D.C. United added a trophy to its collection: the U.S. Open Cup. In both your basement (locker room, coaches’ bunkers) and fourth floor (administrative offices), the mood was cheery all week — even if your cranky air conditioning wasn’t working properly on these unseasonably warm autumn days.

Back to the reality of a rotten regular season. United (3-21-6, 15 points) welcomes the Chicago Fire (11-12-7, 40 points) for the first of four matches wrapping up the MLS campaign. United is seeking to avoid the fewest victories in league history (four), Chicago is famished for points to claim a playoff berth.

Pregame stat of the day: Chicago’s Mike Magee has scored 18 goals this season. United has scored 20 goals this season. (Toss in Marco Di Vaio’s 19 strikes, and we’ve got a three-way Golden Boot race! Heh.)

Previous meeting: United won at Toyota Park, 2-0, in the Open Cup semifinals.

TV: NBC Sports Network.

Streaming: NBC Sports Live Extra.

Kickoff: 8:21 p.m. ET.

Referee: Ricardo Salazar.

Weather outlook from the Capital Weather Gang.

Kind gesture: United and some of its season ticket holders provided 600 seats to Navy Yard employees and first-responders from 14 agencies.

DCU: Willis; Nyassi, Woolard, Kitchen, Riley; Martin, Jeffrey, Thorrington, DeLeon; Silva; Doyle. Subs: Dykstra, Shanosky, Iapichino, Neal, Pontius, Porter, De Rosario.

CHI: Johnson; Anibaba, Soumare, Berry, Segares; Nyarko, Larentowicz, Rios, Rolfe; Magee, Anangono. Subs: Tornaghi, Jumper, Duka, Pause, Lindpere, Alex, Amarikwa.
