Each Monday, the Insider will provide updates about the top NCAA programs in the Washington region. The season culminates in December with the College Cup semifinals and finals: women at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on Dec. 6-8; men at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., Dec. 13-15.

Five Men’s Teams to Watch …

1. Georgetown (8-2-1) continued its mid-season surge, scoring eight goals in a 50-minute stretch for an 8-0 romp over Seton Hall — the 11th-ranked Hoyas’ highest scoring haul since an 8-1 victory over Mount St. Mary’s nine years ago. (The program record was 12 goals against Gallaudet in 1963.) All-American Steve Neumann posted a hat trick and became the fourth player in program history to record 100 career points as Georgetown stretched its unbeaten streak to seven and locked its fifth shutout in six games. Seton Hall does have a losing record (3-5-1) but plays in the Big East and handed Delaware its only defeat of the season. Next: at Providence (7-1-2) on Wednesday.

2. Maryland (5-2-3) extended its unbeaten streak to six and kept a share of first place in the ACC (4-0-1) with Wake Forest after a 2-1 victory over visiting Boston College. Freshman Michael Sauers scored his first career goal five minutes into the match. After conceding 12 goals in the first five matches, the No. 8 Terps have yielded four in the last five. Maryland is averaging 3,463 fans through six home dates. Next: at second-ranked Notre Dame (6-0-3) on Tuesday.

3. Virginia (6-3-1) is also on a roll, pushing its unbeaten run to six with a 5-0 home victory over Pittsburgh — its highest-scoring match in ACC play since 2008. The Cavaliers (2-2-1 in the league) have scored 19 goals during the streak and did not allow a shot on goal by the Panthers in recording their fifth shutout. Next: at Duke (4-4-3) on Tuesday.

4. UMBC (10-1-0), ranked seventh entering the week, rebounded from its first loss of the year (mid-week against Delaware in extra time) to win at Hartford, 2-1. Pete Caringi III ended a three-game scoring absence with his 10th to remain among the national leaders. Next: at William & Mary (5-3-1) on Wednesday.

5. After six weeks of unusual results, William & Mary (5-3-1) did not offer any surprises Saturday, defeating two-win College of Charleston, 1-0. The Tribe has upset two No. 1 teams and lost two games it was expected to win. Next: UMBC (10-1-0) at home on Wednesday.

Five Women’s Teams to Watch …

1. Virginia (12-0-0, 6-0-0 ACC) remained the only unbeaten, untied team in the country following a 3-0 home victory over Clemson. Two juniors and a sophomore provided the scoring. The top-ranked Cavaliers’ goal margin is 40-7 and they’ve conceded just two goals in the second half. ACC points leader Makenzy Doniak, national team call-up Morgan Brian and Brittany Ratcliffe have combined for 25 goals and 14 assists. Next: No. 4 Notre Dame (9-2-1) at home on Thursday.

2. Georgetown is not as perfect as Virginia … but close. The No. 9 Hoyas (11-0-2, 3-0-1 in the Big East) continued the best start in program history with a 2-1 result at Providence, their fifth victory in five away matches. Georgetown has conceded multiple goals in a game just once this year. Next: at first-place Marquette (11-3-0) on Sunday.

3. Katie Yensen (McLean High School) scored in the first minute of extra time as 12th-ranked Virginia Tech (10-1-2, 5-1-1 ACC) defeated Clemson, 1-0, and extended its unbeaten streak to six. The Hokies have given up two goals during this stretch. Next: Notre Dame (9-2-1) at home on Sunday.

4. Maryland (7-6-0) went ahead after 17 seconds — the second-fastest goal allowed in No. 6 North Carolina’s illustrious history — but the defending NCAA champion Tar Heels (10-2-0) equalized in the first half and notched two goals after the break to record a 3-1 victory in Chapel Hill. The Terps have lost three of four. Next: Duke (4-6-3) at home Sunday.

5. After a week of disruption caused by the government shutdown, Patriot League co-leader Navy (10-2-0, 3-0-0) resumed play Saturday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Colgate — the Mids’ eighth consecutive triumph. They have not conceded a goal in almost 516 minutes. Next: at American (5-7-0, 3-0-0) on Tuesday. (The match was rescheduled after the shutdown caused postponement last Wednesday.)
