Five Men’s Teams to Watch …

1. Ninth-ranked Georgetown collected a massive away victory, winning at Big East leader Marquette, 1-0, in extra time. Senior defender Ted Helfrich scored his first career goal on a 94th-minute header off Steve Neumann’s corner kick. The Hoyas (12-3-1, 5-1-1) have conceded two goals in the past eight matches, setting a program record with an 11th shutout, and drew even with the Golden Eagles in the league standings. Next: at St. John’s (8-6-2) on Saturday.

2. Maryland (8-3-5) is not as dominant as in past years but continues to gather victories. With a 1-0 triumph at Syracuse on Saturday, thanks to Dan Metzger’s goal early in the second half, the 15th-ranked Terrapins improved to 7-1-4 in their past 12 outings. Nine of those matches were decided by one goal or ended in a draw. Next: North Carolina State (6-4-4) at home Friday.

3. Here comes Virginia. A 2-0 victory at previously unbeaten and second-ranked Notre Dame stretched the unbeaten streak to 10. Sophomore forward Darius Madison scored twice for the 23rd-ranked Cavaliers, who became the first team to score multiple goals against the Irish. Next: UNC Greensboro (8-6-2) at home Tuesday and No. 20 North Carolina (6-3-5) at home Friday.

4. Seventh-ranked UMBC (12-1-2) is unbeaten in nine straight on the road — a program record — but settled for a 0-0 draw at three-win Binghamton. The Retrievers have scored just three times in the past four matches. Next: at UMass-Lowell (3-12-1) on Saturday.

5. Junior forward Josh West (Brooke Point High in Stafford, Va.) scored in the 77th and 81st minutes to lift William & Mary over Hofstra, 3-2. The Tribe (8-3-1) has won four straight. Next: at Delaware (11-4-0) on Wednesday.

Honorable mention:

Freshman forward Alex Evans scored in the fifth minute of extra time as Navy (10-3-2) won at Holy Cross, 1-0, for its ninth consecutive victory — the program’s longest winning streak in 47 years. The Midshipmen are tied for the Patriot League lead with Army (12-1-1), with the teams set to meet Nov. 8 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

Virginia Commonwealth (8-5-2) is No. 24 but will drop out of the national rankings after a 1-0 loss at Saint Joseph’s.

Old Dominion (9-3-1) has won five straight and six of seven after defeating Florida Atlantic on the road, 2-1.

George Mason (7-2-3) is unbeaten in eight home matches and unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 after a 1-1 draw with La Salle.

Reminder: Maryland SoccerPlex will host the ACC tournament semifinals and final, Nov. 15 and 17. (Ticket info is now available.)

Five Women’s Teams to Watch …

1. Virginia‘s magical season continued Sunday as Annie Steinlage, a Michigan State transfer, scored 54 seconds into extra time to lift the top-ranked Cavaliers over No. 3 Florida State, 1-0. (Video here) The largest Klockner Stadium crowd in program history (3,894) watched the Cavs (18-0-0) clinch the first seed in the ACC tournament. By winning their regular season finale this week, they will become the first team to complete a perfect ACC schedule in seven years. “With the quality and depth of this conference, it is a great accomplishment,” Virginia Coach Steve Swanson said. “We aren’t satisfied yet and we know we have a big game coming up. I know we will be hungry for that game and a chance to make some more history.” The Seminoles lost for the first time after 14 wins and three draws. Next: Fourth-ranked Virginia Tech (14-2-2) at home Thursday night.

2. Virginia Tech (14-2-2) rebounded from a mid-week loss to Florida State to down Miami, 1-0. Freshman forward Murielle Tiernan, a two-time Post All-Met player of the year at Stone Bridge High in Ashburn, scored her eighth goal of the year (tied for the team lead). Canadian goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts set a single-season program record with her eighth shutout. Next: at No. 1 Virginia (18-0-0) on Thursday night.

3. Georgetown (14-1-2), ranked No. 15, scored three times in the first 21 minutes of a 3-1 victory at Villanova. The Hoyas have conceded two goals in the past six matches. Next: Seton Hall (5-10-2) at home Saturday.

4. Navy (15-3-0) won for the 13th time in 14 matches and clinched the top seed in the Patriot League tournament with a 3-0 victory over Loyola. The Mids have registered 13 shutouts and have not conceded a goal in eight conference games. Next: at Army (7-7-3) on Friday.

5. James Madison (14-4-1) secured the top seed in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 2-2 draw at Hofstra. The Dukes are riding a seven-game unbeaten streak and are 11-1-1 over 13 matches. Next: Hofstra or UNC Wilmington at home Nov. 8 in the CAA semifinals.

Honorable mention:

William & Mary (8-2-6) is the No. 2 seed in the CAA tournament.
