*The ACC claimed all four top seeds in the 64-team NCAA women’s tournament, which will begin Friday: Virginia, Virginia Tech, Florida State and North Carolina.

Despite a 20-game winning streak entering last weekend and the No. 1 ranking most of the season, UVA did not receive a favorable draw. Neither did the Cavaliers’ likely second-round opponent, Georgetown. The Hoyas lost once in the regular season (twice overall) and were highly ranked in the coaches’ poll almost all year. In the RPI, which weighs strength of schedule and other factors, Georgetown is No. 12. In the round of 16, the Virginia-Georgetown winner would likely face Penn State, the RPI’s No. 9 team.

Virginia is the nation’s top-scoring team at 3.19 goals per match, while Georgetown is third at 2.95 and Penn State tied for fourth at 2.71.

First-round matchups involving D.C., Maryland and Virginia schools:

Friday

UMBC at Virginia Tech, 5 p.m.

St. Francis (Pa.) at Virginia, 7 p.m.

Saturday

La Salle at Georgetown, 1 p.m.

Liberty at North Carolina, 2 p.m.

In the lower divisions …

The Catholic University men’s team (12-5-2) will appear in the Division III tournament for the first time since 2010. The complete D3 bracket is available here.

The ACC men’s tournament kicks off tonight with quarterfinals at four locations, all starting at 7 p.m. (check school websites for live video availability):

#8 Boston College at #1 Maryland

#6 Virginia at #3 Wake Forest

#5 North Carolina at #4 Clemson

#7 Duke at #2 Notre Dame

Maryland SoccerPlex will host the semifinals and final this weekend. [Ticket information] If you attend, count the number of MLS coaches, general managers and scouts in attendance.

In their final ACC tournament before moving to the Big Ten, the Terrapins are seeking a third league title in four years and sixth overall. Virginia has won the most (10).
