*From the online and print edition, I take a look at Ben Olsen’s efforts at building chemistry with a collection of newcomers from mostly around MLS.
*On the second day of the Carolina Challenge Cup, United will face the third-division Charleston Battery at 7:30 tonight at Blackbaud Stadium (live stream on DCU’s website). With another match Saturday, Olsen is expected to start mostly secondary players. Weather: cold rain here today in the Lowcountry.
*Homegrown forward Michael Seaton, 17, has been named to Jamaica’s 22-man roster for friendlies against Barbados on Sunday and St. Lucia next Wednesday. He is available for United’s match tonight.
*Asked to comment about the status of the Eddie Johnson contract talks, agent Richard Motzkin said: “Having good conversations.”
*John Harkes will not work United matches for Comcast SportsNet this season. “I have decided to step back from calling games for @dcunited as I want to focus on coaching,” he tweeted. Santino Quaranta is expected to join veteran play-by-play man Dave Johnson in the booth. CSN is in the process of finalizing a 16-game schedule. Even with national broadcasts in the mix, several United matches will not be televised this season.
*Nice feature on Seattle’s Osvaldo Alonso in today’s Charleston Post and Courier. (United will face the Sounders on Saturday.)
*Aside from Harkes and Quaranta, more alumni news: Blackpool will not sign transient attacker Freddy Adu. … The Los Angeles Galaxy plans to add defender James Riley, whom DCU decided not to re-sign after last season.
