Matchday: U.S. vs. Mexico friendly

Six weeks ahead of World Cup training camp, the U.S. national team faces old adversary Mexico tonight at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Playing on a non-FIFA fixture date, neither side is at full power. With Brazil on their minds, both coaches are more concerned with player evaluation for final roster spots than the result. That said, Juergen Klinsmann would love to keep his unbeaten record against El Tri intact (2-0-2). The Americans have won 13 straight home matches by a 37-7 margin. (The 50,000+ crowd in Arizona, however, will hardly provide a home setting.)

All eyes on teenage attacker Julian Green, who is poised for his first cap since switching his affiliation to the United States from Germany. It’s also an important night for midfielders Maurice Edu and Brad Davis and forward Chris Wondolowski, who are hoping to make late impressions; and DeAndre Yedlin, 20, a longshot but intriguing candidate at right back.

Kickoff: 11:15 p.m. ET.

TV: ESPN, UniMas.

Online:, WatchESPN.

U.S. lineup: Rimando; Beltran, Gonzalez, Besler, Parkhurst; Zusi, Beckerman, Bradley, Davis; Dempsey, Wondolowski. Subs: S. Johnson, Hamid, Goodson, Yedlin, Edu, Gil, E. Johnson, Donovan, Green. (Six substitutions are permitted.)

MEX lineup: Muñoz; Chavez, Rodriguez, Marquez, Valenzuela, Layun; Zavala, Peña, Brizuela; Fabian, Pulido. Subs: Talavera, Perez, Medina, Montes, Ponce, Aguilar, Jimenez.

Very surprised not to see Donovan in the lineup, again raising the question of whether Klinsmann feels he can play Donovan and Dempsey at the same time.

Also of note: The Americans will apparently line up in a 4-4-2, a departure from Klinsmann’s usual 4-2-3-1 formation.
