That is not a typo in the headline: With World Cup training camp at Stanford five weeks away, American Top 40 narrows to American Top 30 — the number of players Juergen Klinsmann will submit to FIFA by May 12 as his provisional roster. The 23-man list is not due until June 2, and Klinsmann has suggested waiting close to that deadline to set the roster.

With the cast of candidates shrinking and several players offering versatility, I have discontinued the subsets and broadened the positional order.

Changes from last week: Farewell to Oguchi Onyewu, John Brooks, Edgar Castillo, Daniel Williams, Brek Shea, Joe Corona, Jose Torres, Herculez Gomez, Juan Agudelo and Terrence Boyd.

Of note: Check marks indicate my picks for the final roster. “Contenders” are my leading candidates for the 30-man list. Players not mentioned, most notably Corona, could re-enter the mix at any time in the coming weeks. As it stands, I am projecting 13 MLS players, nine European-based players and one Mexican-based player en route to Brazil.
