U.S. World Cup training camp details

Things you should know about U.S. World Cup training camp at Stanford University:

*Players are due to report by May 14. Training will begin late-day on the 14th or early on May 15.

*By May 12, Juergen Klinsmann and the USSF must submit a provisional World Cup roster of 30 players to FIFA. Klinsmann is planning to invite between 26 and 28 players to camp, but that range could change slightly. There is a good chance the USSF will announce either the 30-man list or the camp roster before May 12.

*Although the delegation will spend the majority of each day on campus, utilizing athletic facilities and food services, the team will commute to and from a Bay Area hotel.

*Practices are closed to the public. (Don’t bother trying to peek over the fences. You won’t be able to see anything and security will chase you off.) The federation is exploring the possibility of at least one open session at Stanford during the two-week session leading to the May 27 friendly against Azerbaijan at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

*The team will train at both Stanford Stadium (football) and Cagan Stadium (soccer) and have access to gyms, weight rooms and pools. The USSF will convert one locker room into the players’ lounge and provide temporary upgrades in other areas.

Why Stanford?

“I was totally amazed when I saw [the facilities] for the first time,” Klinsmann said. “We have everything we need to do a good preparation there. This is going to be the foundation of the World Cup, so it’s huge.”

As for the mild climate ahead of warmer Brazil …

“The climate is ideal. We can really work the team hard and focus before we go into the more tropical areas, obviously Brazil, but our last step in our preparation will be Florida for six days. … It is a dry climate, it’s fresh air. We can add more sessions into that period than we usually would do. … We can risk the guys will have some heavy legs, tired legs, because they can put their legs up in the evening. They also need to get that feeling that, ‘Okay, through a lot of work, I will benefit in Brazil. The more I do in that time period at Stanford, the more I will be stronger in Brazil.’ It will be a lot of fun, it will be a lot of work in a positive environment, in a great energy environment such as a college campus.”

In 2010, the U.S. team geared up for the World Cup at Princeton University in New Jersey. In 2002 and ’06, the Americans were based at a Cary, N.C., complex, near Raleigh. In 1998, the USSF chose San Diego.
