The UEFA Champions League final is going to be all-Madrid affair.
Atletico rebounded from a first-half deficit to defeat Chelsea, 3-1, Wednesday at Stamford Bridge in London, securing a May 24 date with crosstown rival Real Madrid in Lisbon. Fox will carry the match live, starting at 2:45 p.m. ET.
Chelsea had held Atletico to a 0-0 draw in the first leg last week in Spain and claimed a 1-0 lead in the return match on Fernando Torres‘s 36th-minute goal. But Adrian equalized just before halftime to provide Atletico with the away-goal advantage, Diego Costa converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute and Arda Turan supplied to clincher in the 72nd.
Atletico, La Liga’s leader with three weeks left, and third-place Real have already collided four times this season: Real won both legs of a Copa del Rey semifinal on 5-0 aggregate; Atletico won at Real and drew at home in league play.
Atletico’s Calderon Stadium is eight kilometers from Real’s Bernabeu. Teams from the same country have met in the final four previous times — Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund last year, for instance — but this will mark the first time they have come from the same city.
Real is seeking to become the first team to win Europe’s premier titles 10 times. Atletico’s only previous appearance in the final came in 1974, losing to Bayern Munich.
