In my print/online preview, I write about United’s hunger for success: returning players seeking redemption for last year’s nightmare and newcomers eager to prove their value after being discarded over the winter.
Kickoff: 10:30 p.m. ET.
Local TV: Comcast SportsNet (first of 16 matches on CSN over the next four months).
Announcers: Dave Johnson and Santino Quaranta.
Pay packages: Direct Kick and MLS Live (subject to blackout).
Referee: Ricardo Salazar.
Weather: 58 degrees, rain, chance of thunderstorms.
DCU injuries: Chris Pontius (hamstring) is out for several months. Eddie Johnson (hamstring) and Sean Franklin (foot) did not travel.
Of note: United is unbeaten in five straight following two losses, while the Timbers are winless through eight matches overall. United is carrying a 20-game winless streak in regular season away matches, dating from October 2012; Portland is 0-0-4 at home this year. In two all-time visits to the Rose City, United has won and drawn.
In Richmond last night, Joe Willis, Taylor Kemp, Conor Shanosky, Collin Martin and Kyle Porter played 90 minutes and Jared Jeffrey 87 in the Kickers’ 1-1 draw with Rochester. Shanosky played a part in setting up a late equalizer.
DCU lineup: Hamid, Korb, Parke, Boswell, Fernandez; DeLeon, Kitchen, Arnaud, Rolfe; Espindola, Doyle. Subs: Dykstra, Neal, Birnbaum, Attakora, Seaton, Silva, Caskey.
POR lineup: Ricketts; Jewsbury, Danso, Kah, Harrington; Chara, Valeri, Johnson, Nagbe, Fernandez; Zakuani. Subs: Weber, Paparrato, Zemanski, Alhassan, Nanchoff, Urruti, Powell.
