The World Cup continues Wednesday with three group-stage games (all times EDT).
Group B: Australia vs. Netherlands in Porto Alegre, noon (ESPN)
Group B: Spain vs. Chile in Rio de Janeiro, 3 p.m. (ESPN)
Group A: Cameroon vs. Croatia in Manaus, 6 p.m. (ESPN)
MATCH OF THE DAY
Spain vs. Chile
After its embarrassing 5-1 loss to the Netherlands on Friday, Spain looks to avoid becoming the third straight European World Cup winner to be knocked out in the group stage as defending champion. A loss to Chile — coming off a 3-1 win over Australia — would almost certainly spell doom for La Roja. The two teams also met in the group stage four years ago in South Africa, with Spain taking a 2-1 win on its way to the title. Of note: U.S. referee Mark Geiger will handle the match after doing well in Saturday’s Colombia-Greece tilt.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Mario Mandzukic, Croatia
The 28-year-old striker, who scored 26 goals for Bayern Munich last season, missed Croatia’s opener against Brazil while serving a one-game FIFA suspension after he was sent off for stomping on an Iceland player during Croatia’s final qualifier in November. At 6 feet 2, Mandzukic is one of the world’s best players in the air, and should give Croatia’s attack an immediate boost.
