The 22-year-old star of “Silver Linings Playbook” was more endearing than ever Sunday evening with a roller coaster of ups and downs (literally, on the stairs of the stage) and what seemed to be sincere awe.
Jennifer Lawrence captured Hollywood’s attention in 2012 for her role as Katniss in “Hunger Games,” along with her incredible physique displayed in “X-Men” and self-deprecating humor at most every public appearance.
But her seemingly normal-ness, despite her incredible talent and success, was on full display at Sundays Oscars. If tripping up the stairs on the way to accept one of Hollywood’s biggest awards isn’t normalizing enough, then add in a much-discussed wardrobe malfunction from earlier in the season and a coordinated prank with Emma Stone.
“I am STARVING. Is there food here?” Lawrence practically begged Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet. “There’s food afterwards,” he said. Lawrence moaned: “Ugh, this show is so long.”
As for the slip, Lawrence did the reasonable thing and acknowledged the awkwardness.
“You guys are just standing up because I fell and that’s really embarrassing, but thank you,” she joked while accepting the Oscar for best actress.
Lawrence was full of nervous humor when asked about the trip backstage. “Was that on purpose? Absolutely,” she mocked instantly. “What went through my mind when I fell down? Uhh a bad word I can’t say, that starts with an F.”
If questioning about a hugely embarrassing moment wasn’t bad enough, it was trailed by even more buzz-deflating follow-ups.
“Its awfully young to have so much success so far, do you feel that is this a good thing that it is coming so early in the career?” inquired another reporter.
“I mean I hope so. I guess we’ll see,” she stammered out, obviously reeling from the bizarre line of questioning so soon after being handed the golden statue.
But hopefully we will all get to see, and be treated to more doses of reality amidst the sea of scripts.
