Royal baby watchers ramp up on Princess Diana’s would-be 52nd Birthday

July 1, 2013

British royal watchers had been speculating that the world’s most eagerly awaited heir, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – or, you know, Prince William and Kate Middleton – might arrive July 1, which happens to be the birthday of the prince’s mother, Diana, the late Princess of Wales. Though, as the clock ticks down on July 1, it seems unlikely that the baby will share a birthday with its grandmother, some palace speculators think the arrival could be imminent.

The palace has said that the duchess is due in July but her decision to skip a recent high-profile society wedding a few hundred miles from London – royal friend Thomas van Straubenzee married Lady Melissa Percy near her family seat of Alnwick Castle, which doubled as Hogwarts in the “Harry Potter” films; Princes William and Harry were both in the wedding party, as was Harry’s former longtime girlfriend, Chelsy Davy  – led many to speculate that the much-reported mid-month due date was a fake-out. Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reported that “Princess Diana had fooled the press by telling them her first baby was due on her birthday, July 1. William arrived 10 days earlier, on June 21.”

So what does all this mean for when the royal wee one will arrive? The mum-to-be was overheard in April saying that “It’s around mid-July but apparently babies have their own agenda.”
