#TBT: The birth of Prince William

July 4, 2013

Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, are expecting their first child any time now. The announced due date is Saturday, July 13, though most details surrounding the birth have been kept under wraps. (Supposedly the couple doesn’t even know the sex of the child.)

But perhaps a few clues about how the arrival of the littlest royal will play out may be gleaned from the birth of Prince William.

Kate will give birth in the same hospital and wing — the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital — where Princess Diana gave birth to William nearly 31 years ago. Diana delivered the baby prince after 17 hours of labor at 9:03 p.m. on June 21, 1982. He weighed 7 lbs 1.05 ozs.

Avid royal observers may recall that Diana’s due date was much later than when she went into labor. A tricky royal tactic? Perhaps.

Charles was the first to address anxious reporters following the official announcement. He told the crowds that gathered outside that the new heir had fair hair, and “luckily” did not look too much like him.

William’s christening was nearly two weeks after his birth, and the first set of family portraits were released about six months later in December.
