‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ Rick Ross: What people are watching and listening to

A great way to gain insight into our country’s psyche? Take a look at what we’re watching on TV, going to see in the movie theater, and listening to on the radio or on our iPods. Every Wednesday, Billboard releases music stats for the past week, so we take the opportunity for some quick analysis all of the above topics and what pop culture is truly the most popular at the moment.

Would it surprise you to know that in addition to being the most-watched show, CBS just picked up “The Big Bang Theory” for three additional years? That’s right, the Chuck Lorre nerd-com will march on through at least 2017, which will be its 10th season, the network announced Wednesday. This means Jim Parsons will keep showing up in the lead actor in a comedy category at the Emmys, probably forever. And that cast will be very, very rich.

Meanwhile, ABC is probably popping champagne/heaving a big sigh of relief over a big debut of “Resurrection,” the drama with those creepy commercials about people returning from the dead: The network has a successful new drama! (Well, based on the premiere, anyway. We’ll see how it plays out.) Elsewhere, CBS rules the top of the chart, as usual.

TOP 10 CABLE SHOWS

1) “The Walking Dead” (AMC) 12.6 million
2) “Duck Dynasty” (A&E) 6.1 million
3) WWE, Monday 8 to 9 p.m. (USA) 4.7 million
4) “Talking Dead” (AMC) 4.6 million

6) “Pawn Stars” (History) 4.5 million
7) WWE, Monday 10 to 11 p.m. (USA) 4.4 million
9) “Gold Rush” (Discovery) 4.4 million
8) “Pawn Stars” (History) 4 million
10) “Real Housewives of Atlanta” (Bravo) 3.9 million
(TVBytheNumbers via Nielsen, March 3-9)

The list is virtually unchanged from last week (and will likely remain that way until “The Walking Dead” ends its season) with one new entry: “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” which is winding down its sixth season by ramping up the drama. Way, way down on the list: Lindsay Lohan’s upsetting reality show on OWN. The debut of “Lindsay” attracted just 693,000 people — even less than pay cable shows, such as HBO’s “Girls.” (Which, incidentally, cracked a million viewers this week.)

As we reported, reviews for Zack Snyder’s “300″ sequel were horrendous, but at least entertaining — and audiences don’t seem to mind the blood-and-gorefest. Kid-friendly “Mr. Peabody” was also a hit, while success at the Oscars launched Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave” into the top 10.

TOP ALBUMS/SONGS (via Billboard)

Rapper Rick Ross had a good week, landing at No. 1 with 179,000 copies sold of his new album,”Mastermind,”  according to Nielsen Soundscan. He beat out Pharrell, who even with getting an Oscar nod and showing up on the red carpet with giant hats and suit shorts, checked in at No. 2 with new album “G I R L,” selling 112,000 copies. Meanwhile, “Glee” star Lea Michele’s first solo album came in at No. 4 (60,000), with rising country group Eli Young Band right behind her at No. 5, with an album that contains one of the best songs ever about the dangers of drunk-dialing.

More good news for Pharrell, though: Oscar nominated “Happy” is still the country’s No. 1 song. Latest Coldplay single “Magic” debuts at No. 7. John Legend, Katy Perry and Jason Derulo also make it in the Top 5.
